Homelands 2024 Now Accepting Submissions

The third annual Homelands art show will take place in our Sacred Space from Sept. 13th through Nov. 3rd, 2024. Homelands is an exclusively Ute, Cheyenne and Arapaho show, to give annual voice to those whose lands our space is built upon.

If you’d like to participate as fine artist having your work displayed or as a performer participating in the opening event, please get in contact with us through the form on our Sacred Space page of the website.

Below is a letter from the co-founder and curator of Homelands, Arapaho/Haida artist Bruce Cook.

Dear Ute, Cheyenne and Arapaho Artists,

We are delighted to extend an invitation for you to participate in Creative Nations' annual Homelands group exhibition. This year, our focus is on "Reconnection," emphasizing the significance of coming together, sharing thoughts, and fostering connections. The past months of separation have allowed us all to reflect on the importance of gratitude: for family, loved ones, cherished friends, and places that bring us joy.

During this period of distancing and solitude, we imagine you have explored your creativity through self-reflection, reconnecting with family, learning new stories, or finding solace in quiet moments. Perhaps this time has inspired you to venture into new creative territories within your craft, exploring uncharted paths. Whatever this journey has meant for you, we invite you to express it through your art. Tell a story that holds personal meaning—a celebration of your cultural experience, family, ancestors, or aspirations for the future. We aim to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of our region and your unique connection to it.

We understand that this invitation comes later than expected. We encourage you to look around your studio. Perhaps you have already started a piece that began with a spark of inspiration during quiet times. Consider completing that piece now. Alternatively, if you have an idea you haven’t yet begun, we encourage you to start now! We look forward to celebrating your creativity and curating an exhibition that brings together the diverse artwork of our artists. We are excited to announce the annual Homelands show, which specifically showcases artwork from members of the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes. This year, we are focusing on the theme of Reconnection, and we invite you to share your artistic journey with us.

We understand that not every artist has a large collection ready to exhibit, so we welcome even a single piece for submission. This ensures that no one feels the pressure to have multiple works in order to participate.

As part of our commitment to supporting artists, we will cover the shipping costs for your pieces in both directions if they do not sell. This allows you to focus on your art without worrying about logistical expenses.

To participate in this enriching opportunity, please express your interest by August... This will give us ample time to prepare for the show, which will take place in mid to late August.

We look forward to celebrating the rich cultural heritage and artistic talent of our community through your work. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need further information.

Please submit your interest and artwork details by August 6, 2024 through our online form. We look forward to potentially showcasing your work in our gallery.

Best Regards,

Bruce Cook
